This Book Four of Managing Yourself
We all think we are natural communicators – after all we have learned the skills of talking, listening, reading and writing – unfortunately, we don’t always use these skills at a high level.
The most common problem is that we suffer from communication breakdown. Knowing how this occurs and being aware of potential pitfalls is a huge step towards communicating effectively.
The keys to good basic communication are listening properly and asking intelligent questions. Most people know that it is important to listen but have never been taught how to listen effectively. Using some of the techniques in this programme will help anyone who finds their listening skills need polishing to start improving.
What’s it all about?
Communication is something we all do, but most of us have no real idea if we are good at it, not so good at it, or if people wonder what we’re on about most of the time.
Providing we have all our faculties we all learn the four major communication methods – listening, talking, reading and writing. We also learn the art of body language, but usually without knowing we have learned it or really understanding how it works for us.
Most of us use all five of these skills unconsciously once we have got past the learning to speak, read and write stages and apply them without much conscious thought unless we have a particularly important speech or presentation to make.
In order to learn to speak, we first had to learn to listen. Similarly, in order to learn to write we had to learn to read. We spend between 50-80% of our waking hours communicating. At least 45% of that communication time is spent listening. However, the skills that are taught most are those that are used least – and vice versa.
This book and the others in the series are essential to being a good communicator and manager.
