The YOU Tree
Finally someone has said it - it IS all about YOU!
We all know that the world of personal development is scattered with the debris of failed programs, disappointed future millionaires, phrases, "magic" words and workbooks. We also know there are wizards, practitioners and masters; catalysts, coaches and gurus who will sell you their magic potion promising to cure your life and fill it with only beautiful people and plenty of money.
The author acknowledges that he is regularly asked if he can help people with all manner of ‘ills'- the desire to be thinner; more successful; richer etc. He has discovered that if you can help people with any of these things they will pay you handsomely. He acknowledges that people want to do well and be successful, and they want to do it with purpose and integrity. Sadly, they are also looking for the instruction manual, how do they do things right while doing the right things..?
So to save people from the ‘shelf-help' gurus who promise riches beyond measure in exchange for a large fee - he has created ‘The YOU TREE'
A model that helps to explain the relationship we have with our lives and the results we achieve as we go on the journey.
He suggests that there are two sides to all of us - the visible and the invisible.
Our visible attributes can include your behaviour, results, relationships and communication style. The invisible attributes will be those that cannot be seen by others - these are our beliefs, our values and our unique personality (what he calls our ‘root system')..
The YOU TREE shows how these attributes affect you, your results and your connection with the environment.
Above the ground (the tree) he suggest that, we need to check our results and also make sure that the environment we are operating within is supportive and enriching because even the best tree in a toxic environment will die...
So the questions he urges us to ask ourselves are:
1. Are my goals and objectives clear and congruent with my standards?
2. Do I have the knowledge I need to pursue my objectives?
3. Are my values and beliefs holding me back or pushing me forwards?
4. Is my Environment positive and enriching?
5. Are my results enabling me to improve?
And finally he asks us to acknowledge that - our TREE can only be as successful as our root system. That the fruit our tree bears will be dependent upon the nourishment we give it and the environment in which we allow it to flourish.
After years of the ‘self-help' industry and the thousands of books on the subject, we kind of ‘know' this stuff. Sadly knowing and changing are two different things.
If you ‘know' that your life, your health, your relationships and your career are NOT what you want them to be - you seriously need to check those ‘roots'.
A great little book and a salutory reminder that our results ARE changeable; we CAN be more, do more and have more if we are willing to check our tree.
