Equality is not Equity

‘I treat everyone the same', is a phrase often heard. Worn as a badge of pride, it usually hides a multitude of injustices. Treating everyone the same means one-size-fits-all, and, as every woman shopper knows, that's not the case.

‘I treat everyone as an individual’ is more helpful. You get to see the whole person, looking for their uniqueness and building connections that strengthen relationships.

Honouring your individuality does not compromise my own, nor make me a doormat. Flexibility in adapting does not diminish my culture, rather it adds to my ability to be compassionate and treat you as an individual of worth.

I don’t have to like or agree, simply to acknowledge that we are not the same. I won’t judge you for our differences, and I hope that you will not judge me.

Until next time,
