Moving Beyond The Boys’ Club For Women In Consultancies and the Legal Sector

By Suzanne Doyle-Morris PhD

$17.00 USD

Tips for Women Who Want to Progress

What does the author mean when she talks about ‘moving beyond the boy's club'?

Suzanne Doyle Morris's books are not about knocking men; they are about helping women achieve and progress to the highest levels of our organizations. Something women still don't do, for whatever reason, in any great number.

In this book she discusses the particular challenges women in consultancies and law firms face; the fact that these are still largely male preserves despite the number of women who leave law school with a variety of post-graduate degrees.

Suzanne has spent many years coaching and mentoring professional women, and in this book she deals with:

  • The early years of Practice - learning the ropes and becoming billable
  • The burden of tokenism
  • The proactive career and how to get on that fast-track
  • Strategies to help get beyond the boys' club
  • How to network to find clients and how to treat meetings as your shop window
  • How to ask for the opportunities you want and how to get credit for your ideas
  • How to promote your team
  • And getting fluent in figures
  • The challenges of high powered jobs and the need to look after home and family

All Suzanne's books are built around the successful women she has interviewed. She uses real life stories and real life examples of women who have become successful on their own merit and despite the boys' club.

And as always, Suzanne has some wonderful truisms:

  • That to succeed women may have to make hard choices
  • To tread carefully before you take any job where you will be a token
  • Being the only woman makes you noticeable - which can be a benefit
  • Women too can work long hours if they have virtually full-time support at home. A trend on the rise
  • As unromantic as it may initially seem, who you marry has a huge impact on your career
  • You must get comfortable with the idea of self-promotion and your colleagues are not mind-readers; tell them what you are doing
  • Male colleagues doubting the reasons for your success may add to your self-doubt

Although Suzanne has written this book primarily with consultancy and the legal professions in mind; any woman working in a male dominated environment will benefit immensely from her sage wisdom.

A wonderful read.
