Would you like a salary of $70K and a bonus of $1 million?
One hundred years ago (yes 100 years ago) Andrew Carnegie paid one of his managers exactly that.
Carnegie's rationale was that the $70K was for what the manager could do, the $1m for what the manager could get other people to do.
Pay for performance is one of those very strange and emotional issues - does money motivate or not? Do huge salaries make people arrogant and out of touch with reality or are they just being paid what they are worth? I know the bankers and share brokers and CEOs on huge salaries have shocked most of us with their earnings - but right there in history is an example of someone receiving a similarly huge salary.
