Successful businesses often come from a personal need
Trademe was a business started in NZ by a young college student (Sam Morgan). He needed a cheap electric heater and every time he found one being advertised in the local newspaper he was pipped at the post.
So he started Trademe - a business he sold a couple of years ago for many squillions of dollars.
Similarly Pumpkin Patch (not sure if the UK has these stores), the woman who started that business couldn't find nice clothes for her children so started maiking her own - people asked where she got them and hence the business was formed. That business is now listed on the stock exchange.
Just read another story of a young couple who couldn't find nice shoes for their baby daughter so the husband made some for her - they now sell 700,000 pairs annually.
