Gen Y. The greediest least motivated workers of all time

I had a desperate call from someone yesterday saying 'Help - we've just taken this young lass on as our receptionist and she is hopeless.' What do we do?

After a few preliminary questions I realised the lass was a Gen Y. The generation that sadly, have been told they can BE anything they want to be (usually famous), DO anything they want to do, and HAVE anything they want to have - all without much effort. Oh dear.

And now they are coming into the workplace, meeting the real world and it ain't pretty.

My advice - talk to her - use TOUGHLOVE - set our your exdpectations very clearly, but give her lots of encouragement and support. See how things go.

But basically if you have Gen Y's you are going to have to put a lot of time and effort into TRAINING them.
