Michael Smyth is known as the Approachable Lawyer, however he is also an author and entrepreneur. He is an expert in how the law can be used to keep small and medium sized business out of trouble. He draws on his background as a commercial litigator in London where for 6 years he was exposed to all types of business with all manner of legal problems. He has litigated claims worth £millions and was even involved in the fraud case which saw the Bank of England change the £20 note!
All that fighting over money helped Michael see the futility of it all, so he turned his attention to helping small to medium sized businesses avoid litigation. As a business owner himself (in fact he owns three) his aim is to make law accessible and understandable to New Zealand small business. Approachable Lawyer has a simple motto: proactive legal advice at an affordable cost, not reactive legal advice at an extortionate cost.
That's why Michael turned to writing books. In November 2008 he released Employed But Not Engaged: How to break up with your employees and hold on to the ring which teaches business owners how to rid their business of disengaged employees without getting sued for a personal grievance. He is currently writing his second book Big Wide Ocean: Strategies For Worry Free Business which teaches business owners who to avoid and protect themselves from the sharks in the business ocean.
Sir Bob Jones described Employed But Not Engaged as "every employer's bible" and the book has received acclaim from reviewers across the country.
Michael also regularly writes for magazines, and has appeared on TV and Radio in New Zealand. Appearances include TV One's Close Up at 7 programme, TV One News, National Radio, Sky Sport 365, Newstalk ZB, Radio Sport and Radio Rhema.
